How thick should leather be for a key fob? Using high-quality full-grain cowhide, we recommend a leather thickness of 2-2.5mm (5-6 oz). You can choose thicker vegetable-tanned leather for a sturdier feel or lychee-pattern chrome-tanned leather for a softer touch, depending on your needs.
This pattern features a cartoon design, with finished dimensions of 8.5cm x 11.5cm x 1cm. It requires about 1 square foot of leather (for reference only) and includes 4mm spacing for punching holes. The suggested hardware includes a keychain and leather cord.
Instructions:
1. Prepare the leather: Obtain approximately 1 square foot of your chosen leather type. 2. Cut the leather: Use the Babylon leather car key fob protector pattern to trace and cut the leather pieces. 3. Punch holes and treat edges: Punch holes at 4mm intervals and treat the edges. Depending on the leather type, surface treatment may be required (e.g., plant-tanned leather). For other types, such as smooth leather, surface treatment may not be necessary. Waxed leather may only need a simple wipe. 4. Sew and assemble: Prepare needle and thread, sew the pieces together, and assemble the hardware. 5. Finalize: Adjust the shape and attach the keychain and leather cord.
Once completed, you can keep the key fob protector with your other keys, serving both as a car key fob protector and a decorative keychain charm. It's incredibly cute, and the high-quality leather ensures this project remains impressive for a long time.
